GSK acquires 35Pharma
GSK has agreed to acquire Canadian biotechnology firm 35Pharma for $950 million in cash, expanding its footprint in biopharmaceuticals. This acquisition aligns with GSK's ongoing strategy to enrich its pipeline in areas such as cardiopulmonary diseases, heart failure, and obesity treatments. The transaction follows closely on the heels of GSK's recent $1 billion licensing deal with Frontier BioSciences.
Under the terms of the deal, GSK will gain complete ownership of 35Pharma, including access to its promising drug candidates. The primary asset of interest in this acquisition is HS235, a treatment for pulmonary hypertension (PH), which has completed Phase I trials in overweight or obese volunteers. GSK regards HS235 as a "potential best-in-class" therapy, with its mechanism of action focusing on inhibiting proteins linked to PH. The company highlights HS235's enhanced selectivity over existing treatments, potentially offering improved safety by reducing adverse effects such as severe bleeding, a concern with current therapies like MSD's Winrevair.
The acquisition of 35Pharma represents GSK's broader ambition to strengthen its therapeutic offerings and address the limitations of current PH treatments. GSK's Chief Scientific Officer, Tony Wood, has emphasized HS235's additional potential to deliver metabolic benefits critical for PH patients, such as aiding weight loss and improving insulin sensitivity. With a significant portion of PH patients experiencing obesity, these benefits may enhance the drug's market appeal.
This transaction is indicative of GSK's recent aggressive pursuit of new assets to safeguard against looming patent expirations. The acquisition is part of a larger series of strategic investments, including a $2.2 billion purchase of RAPT Therapeutics and a $50 million collaboration with Noetik to integrate artificial intelligence into drug development and other operations. Such initiatives illustrate GSK's intent to remain competitive amid increasing pressure within the pharmaceutical sector to innovate and deepen its therapeutic footprint.
Going forward, GSK plans to initiate further studies on HS235 in contexts such as PH caused by heart failure and pulmonary arterial hypertension. The closing of this acquisition will hinge upon the customary regulatory approvals, but it is a decisive step by GSK toward mitigating upcoming patent cliffs and strengthening its therapeutic arsenal.
