Amazon acquires Adept

Amazon has acquired the AI startup Adept, although the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed. This acquisition brought David Luan, the co-founder of Adept, into Amazon's fold as the Vice President of Agents and Head of its San Francisco AI lab. However, after two years with the company, Luan has announced his departure, planning to pursue new ventures in AI research.

David Luan joined Amazon in 2024 with Adept’s acquisition, leading efforts in scaling agent training systems invented at Adept. During his tenure, Amazon's AI lab under Luan developed and expanded its offerings, including the Nova Act agent, an AI model competing with similar tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. The Nova Act is particularly noted for its ability to perform tasks autonomously in web browsers, which has seen adoption by clients such as 1Password and Amazon’s own platforms.

For Amazon, acquiring Adept and integrating Luan's expertise was a strategic move to bolster its capabilities in artificial intelligence. Luan’s efforts have intertwined AI research more closely with Amazon Web Services (AWS), aiming to deliver competitive AI solutions within the cloud computing landscape.
