Zomato acquires Blinkit
Zomato completed the acquisition of quick-commerce firm Blinkit in 2022, a transaction valued at approximately INR 4,447 crore (around $568 million). The all-stock deal reflects Zomato's strategic shift towards the burgeoning quick-commerce sector, capitalizing on Blinkit’s infrastructure and market position. The acquisition, however, was not without its challenges, leading to tensions at the executive level during the post-merger integration phase.
Deepinder Goyal, CEO of Zomato, disclosed on a podcast that he twice asked Blinkit’s founder, Albinder Dhindsa, to step down in the wake of the acquisition, pointing to difficulties in cultural and operational alignment. Goyal cited the need for a leadership mindset reset as Blinkit struggled to adapt to the new ownership dynamics. Despite the pressure, Dhindsa remained as CEO, ultimately aligning with the broader goals of the merged entity.
The motivation behind acquiring Blinkit was clear: to pivot from its original grocery delivery model to a highly responsive quick-commerce offering. Post-acquisition, Blinkit has surpassed expectations, outpacing Zomato’s core food delivery service in growth. The rapid rise of Blinkit within the group's portfolio is now seen as a critical driver for Zomato’s quest for profitability, with the company validating its strategic direction and expenditure through recent robust performance metrics.
Initial investor skepticism led to a drop in Zomato’s share price at the time of the deal, highlighting concerns over the transaction’s valuation and the viability of the quick-commerce sector. However, as Blinkit has integrated and expanded, these worries have largely dissipated. The market is currently observing a shift towards similar integrations as competitors analyze their strategies in the quick-commerce landscape.
Looking ahead, Zomato will aim to sustain Blinkit’s growth trajectory, keeping the focus on operational excellence and market penetration. Any lasting regulatory hurdles or cultural integration barriers will need diligent management, but with Dhindsa’s renewed leadership proving effective, the company appears well-positioned to capitalize on its current momentum.
