Carrix acquires Five Rivers Distribution

Carrix, through its Logistics Services Inc. (LSI) subsidiary, has acquired the assets of Arkansas-based Five Rivers Distribution for approximately $750,000. This acquisition, completed on June 1, enables LSI to bolster its inland waterways operations by expanding its presence on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System. Five Rivers, known for its operations at ports in Van Buren and Fort Smith, provides services in barge, rail, bulk storage, and trucking primarily for the agricultural and industrial sectors.

The acquisition aligns with LSI's strategic focus on growing its inland river network and expanding customer solutions, according to Meghan Weinman, president of Carrix's Conventional Division. Five Rivers' established strengths in efficient inland river operations and deep customer relationships were key factors in the transaction. All 17 employees of Five Rivers will remain, with Marty Shell continuing to oversee operations at both port locations. Shell praised LSI's employee-focused culture, noting that the acquisition promises enhanced benefits and salaries for staff.

Five Rivers' existing projects include significant developments in port infrastructure, funded by federal grants and the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration. Ongoing projects include a nearly $10 million transload yard at the Port of Fort Smith and an $18 million slackwater harbor project in Van Buren. Shell, retaining control over these projects, sees the acquisition as an opportunity to concentrate on executing approximately $25 million in planned enhancements.

In a competitive transportation and logistics sector, the deal strengthens LSI's ability to offer comprehensive services along key inland waterways. Carrix, via its subsidiaries such as SSAMarine, gains further foothold in the region, aiming to leverage newfound synergies for broader business development opportunities. The acquisition reflects a trend of consolidation and expansion within the logistics industry, where access to strategic locations and sophisticated supply chain solutions are increasingly pivotal.
