Versant acquires Free TV Networks
Versant, a spin-off from Comcast focusing on media and entertainment, has finalized its acquisition of Free TV Networks (FTN), a U.S. provider of free over-the-air digital broadcast networks and FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) channels. This acquisition was completed on December 5, 2025. Financial terms remain undisclosed.
FTN will continue to operate as a distinct business unit within Versant, allowing the company to expand its footprint across both over-the-air and FAST distribution platforms. This move is designed to complement Versant’s current brand portfolio by engaging the growing audience that prefers free television. Jonathan Katz, the founder of FTN, will join Versant’s leadership team, maintaining his role in directing FTN’s daily operations and reporting to David Pietrycha, Versant’s Chief Revenue and Business Officer.
The acquisition reflects Versant’s strategic focus on diversifying its distribution model and increasing audience engagement. This transaction follows closely on the heels of its purchase of INDY Cinema Group, which operates under Fandango. Together, these moves reflect Versant’s intent to build vertical businesses that enhance distribution capabilities and create innovative audience touchpoints across both existing and emerging platforms.
The transaction occurs amidst a shifting landscape in the media sector where FAST channels have emerged as a new norm in the U.S. television market, driven by evolving viewer preferences towards free and ad-supported content. By integrating FTN’s network operations, Versant positions itself to capitalize on this trend while adding flexibility to its content distribution strategies. Competitors in the media space are likely to monitor this development, given the increasing focus on leveraging free-to-air and streaming solutions.
Looking ahead, the integration of FTN into Versant’s operations could potentially attract regulatory scrutiny, although such concerns appear limited in scope given the nature of the industry segment involved. Future milestones for Versant may include further strengthening its content offerings and distribution mechanisms to solidify its standing in a rapidly evolving media environment.
