Republic Services acquires Hamm
Republic Services Inc. has acquired the Hamm Sanitary Landfill and Materials Recovery Facility in Lawrence, Kansas, for $400 million. This acquisition forms a significant part of the $400 million that Republic Services has already allocated for acquisitions in 2026. The transaction comes amid the firm's ongoing strategy to expand its footprint in the waste management sector and capitalize on growth opportunities.
The Phoenix-based company, a major player in the waste management industry, reported a total revenue of $16.6 billion for 2025, marking a 3.5% increase compared to the previous year. Net income rose to $2.14 billion from $2.04 billion in 2024, reflecting robust business performance despite cyclical demand challenges. Republic Services has been actively pursuing acquisitions, having spent $1.1 billion in 2025, and plans to invest about $1 billion in further acquisitions in 2026.
The acquisition of Hamm Sanitary Landfill and Materials Recovery Facility aligns with Republic’s strategy to bolster its capabilities in waste processing and recycling. The company is navigating cyclical demand headwinds by focusing on price management and cost efficiency. "We delivered another strong year of results in 2025, underscoring the resilience of our business model and the strength of our differentiated capabilities," said Jon Vander Ark, President and CEO. The firm achieved organic growth in its waste and recycling business, which offset declines in its environmental solutions division.
Republic Services is enhancing its operational infrastructure with strategic investments, having also launched multiple renewable natural gas (RNG) projects to augment its environmental solutions offerings. The company introduced nine RNG projects in 2025 and anticipates four more in 2026, furthering its commitment to sustainability.
As Republic continues its acquisition strategy and infrastructure enhancements, the waste management sector could see shifts in competitive dynamics, particularly as the company advances its integration initiatives. Republic aims for continued profitable growth in 2026, supported by strategic acquisitions and productivity enhancements from digital tools. The firm’s focus on long-term value creation through acquisitions and technology positions it to navigate a dynamic macroeconomic environment effectively.
