Hermeus Corp. raises $350M in Series C

Hermeus Corp., an aerospace company specializing in hypersonic aircraft technology, has raised $350 million in equity and debt financing. The investment comprises a $200 million Series C round led by Khosla Ventures, alongside contributions from multiple backers, and $150 million from institutional lenders. This funding round values the Los Angeles-based startup at $1 billion.

Hermeus is leveraging this capital to advance its development of hypersonic drones for the U.S. military. These drones are designed to travel at speeds five times faster than sound, utilizing a unique jet engine that combines elements of turbojet and ramjet designs. The company's engine, derived from a modified version of the Pratt & Whitney F100, transitions from turbojet to ramjet operation as the aircraft accelerates. It also incorporates a precooler to enhance speed by reducing the temperature of incoming air.

The funding will enable Hermeus to expand its manufacturing capabilities, allowing the production of multiple aircraft simultaneously. AJ Piplica, Hermeus' CEO, stated this financial boost will accelerate the company’s timeline to achieve ramjet-powered flight, moving them closer to operational hypersonic speeds.

This strategic financing places Hermeus at the forefront of the competitive aerospace sector, amid growing demand for advanced military technology.
