Kraken acquires Magna

Kraken has acquired token management platform Magna as the cryptocurrency exchange fortifies its infrastructure in preparation for an anticipated initial public offering (IPO). The acquisition, completed last Friday through Kraken's parent company Payward, was announced on Wednesday. Financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, though sources such as PitchBook have previously valued Magna at $70 million in its most recent funding round.

Magna's platform is designed to streamline the complexities involved in token distribution, including vesting schedules and escrow workflows. It serves as a logistical backbone for teams managing substantial token ecosystems valued at peaks of $60 billion. The company's services cater to over 160 clients, making it an integral component for tracking token ownership when crypto projects offer tokens instead of equity in venture capital raises. Bruno Faviero, CEO of Magna, states that the acquisition provides the resources needed to enhance their offerings with Kraken's institutional-grade infrastructure.

For Kraken, the acquisition of Magna is a strategic move to engage with token issuers at an earlier stage of their development. Kraken co-CEO Arjun Sethi emphasized that integrating Magna expands the firm's capacity to support token projects from inception through to liquidity events. Magna will remain a standalone platform while contributing to Kraken's objective of developing a comprehensive product suite aimed at supporting the full lifecycle of crypto asset management.

This acquisition is Kraken's sixth in the past year as it broadens its services in advance of going public. The firm confidentially filed for an IPO in November 2025 and has taken steps to increase transparency by releasing select financials earlier this year. The competition to dominate the burgeoning token management sector is intensifying, with rival exchange Coinbase acquiring Magna's competitor, Liquifi, in July 2025. Both exchanges are expanding from traditional crypto trading into broader financial services, including derivatives and tokenized assets, and are investing heavily in token ecosystem infrastructure.

Looking forward, Kraken's strategy appears focused on targeted acquisitions rather than a scattershot approach. The success of such acquisitions will hinge on their ability to synergize with Kraken's existing operations and facilitate a seamless transition to a public company.
