Rheinmetall has finalized the acquisition of Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL), the military shipbuilding arm of the Lürssen Group, for approximately €1 billion (around $1.1 billion), following receipt of necessary antitrust approvals. The deal, concluded on March 1, 2026, positions Rheinmetall as a key provider within the European defence technology sector, expanding its capabilities into naval construction and technology.

The acquisition includes NVL's four northern German shipyards and additional international facilities, collectively employing 2,100 personnel. As part of the transition, NVL will operate as the Naval Systems Division under Rheinmetall. Despite not disclosing the purchase price, Rheinmetall's strategic move consolidates its footprint in the maritime military sector. NVL, previously known as Lürssen Defence until a restructuring in 2021, has supplied around 1,000 ships to over fifty naval and coastguard clients worldwide and recorded approximately €1 billion in sales in 2024.

Rheinmetall aims to leverage NVL’s extensive experience in shipbuilding, maintenance, and lifecycle support to enhance its offerings in the defence sector. The integration of NVL’s capability is expected to lead to the development of a comprehensive systems house for navy and coastguard vessels, including maritime autonomous surface systems. Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger emphasized the merger's potential to establish Rheinmetall as a “powerful full-range supplier” of modern surface vessels, contributing to Germany's and NATO's naval defence strength.

The acquisition reflects broader trends in the defence sector, as companies enhance their offerings amid rising geopolitical tensions. Rheinmetall’s move comes at a time when European defence budgets are under scrutiny, seeking to bolster capabilities in response to evolving security challenges. The integration of NVL into Rheinmetall's portfolio may prompt competitors to reassess their strategies in naval and defence technology sectors.

Looking ahead, the assimilation of NVL into Rheinmetall's operations will likely focus on generating synergies within production and development to maximize growth potential. The successful integration of NVL’s expertise and facilities will be critical in positioning Rheinmetall to meet the increasing demands of naval defence both domestically and for NATO partners.
