Arif Habib consortium acquires Pakistan International Airlines
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has been acquired by the Arif Habib Consortium in a $482 million privatization deal. The agreement, signed in Islamabad, transfers ownership of the loss-making national carrier to the consortium. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed optimism that the new ownership could rejuvenate the airline’s operations and service quality.
The deal includes a financial arrangement worth PKR 180 billion, with PKR 135 billion earmarked for investment into the airline’s infrastructure and service improvements. The remaining PKR 55 billion is set to be transferred to the government. The transaction process, which officials claim was handled transparently and included a live broadcast of the bidding, was supervised by prominent government and military officials.
The acquisition comes against a backdrop of financial instability at PIA, marked by years of operational inefficiencies and substantial debt accumulation. Prime Minister Sharif underscored the historical significance of PIA, once a leading regional airline in the 1960s, suggesting that the Arif Habib Consortium could restore the carrier's previous prestige. Enhanced customer service standards, improved punctuality, and a focus on passenger comfort and safety are anticipated under the new management.
PIA’s privatization signals a critical shift in Pakistan's aviation landscape, potentially influencing competition among domestic and regional carriers. The involvement of the Arif Habib Consortium, led by well-known business figures, suggests a significant capital allocation aimed at revamping the airline amidst competitive pressure in the sector.
Regulatory approval and the completion of operational transitions remain pivotal next steps for the consortium as it assumes control. This privatization effort marks an important phase in PIA’s longstanding restructuring bids and could set a precedent for public asset management in Pakistan's aviation sector.
