Panthalassa raises $140M in Series B
Panthalassa has secured $140 million in a Series B funding round, led by Peter Thiel, to propel its wave energy technology that integrates energy generation and AI computing at sea. This fresh capital injection will enable the Oregon-based company to finalize construction of its pilot manufacturing facility near Portland. Panthalassa's technology utilizes massive floating orbs to harness wave power in ocean regions, converting that into reliable clean energy, a process which is supported by onsite data processing through low-Earth-orbit satellite networks.
The funding round saw participation from prominent investors, including John Doerr, Marc Benioff’s TIME Ventures, and Max Levchin’s SciFi Ventures, among others, alongside returning investors such as Founders Fund and Lowercarbon Capital. Since its inception in 2016, Panthalassa has now raised a total of $210 million. The company, structured as a public benefit corporation, is pushing forward with its ambitious goal to deploy its Ocean-3 pilot systems this year and plans for commercial deployment by 2027.
Panthalassa's innovation seeks to overcome one of wave energy's significant hurdles: the costly infrastructure typically required to transport energy from offshore sites. By utilizing the power onsite, specifically for operating AI computing models with the ocean water serving as a natural coolant, the company claims to provide a sustainable energy option that aligns with the growing demand from data centers and electrified transportation sectors.
In a sector where wave energy has been largely overshadowed, Panthalassa's approach could catalyze a shift. Competitors in the region and globally have also garnered significant investment, but the blending of wave power with AI capability could set a new trajectory for clean energy development. Comparisons are drawn to space-based solar data centers, reflecting a broader trend toward utilizing off-earth environments for energy solutions.
Looking forward, the successful deployment of Panthalassa's technology hinges on continued advancements in both wave energy collection and AI integration. As their commercial systems edge closer to reality, regulatory approvals and operational scalability will determine how quickly such innovations can be brought to market. The sector will be watching closely to see if this marks a turning point for marine-based renewable energy.
