Morningside University acquires St. Luke’s College
Morningside University has completed the first phase of its acquisition of St. Luke’s College, a private institution affiliated with UnityPoint Health, both situated in Sioux City. With regulatory approvals from the Higher Learning Commission already secured as of November, the effective transaction date was December 31. The acquisition aims at expanding and strengthening educational offerings in the field of health sciences, an area of longstanding collaboration between the two institutions through joint “two-plus-two programs” since 2019.
Key figures in the process, including Morningside's Provost Chris Spicer and Jackie Barber, Dean of the Nylen School of Nursing and Health Sciences, have underscored the acquisition's potential to bolster the academic delivery of healthcare programs. They emphasize its importance for addressing the regional health care workforce needs. Spicer mentioned that while the first phase proceeded smoothly, the transition requires U.S. Department of Education approval for changes in ownership, during which St. Luke’s will maintain independent degree authorization and accreditation.
Strategically, Morningside aims to incorporate St. Luke’s programs relating to nursing, radiologic technology, respiratory care, and a bachelor’s completion in health sciences. These additions will enhance Morningside’s existing curricula in nursing and health sciences. Notably, Morningside has decided not to retain St. Luke’s RN-BSN degree program, instead directing future enrollments into its own equivalent program. The integration process includes transitioning St. Luke’s faculty into Morningside, which Barber notes has been met with enthusiasm on both sides.
The acquisition comes as higher education institutions increasingly seek synergies to strengthen specialized offerings amid competitive pressures and changing workforce demands. Particularly in health sciences, institutions are focused on improving educational pathways to meet workforce shortages. This acquisition could set a precedent for further collaborations or mergers in the sector, aiming to capitalize on each entity’s strengths to fill critical gaps in healthcare education and training.
As the process continues, attention remains on securing U.S. Department of Education approvals and addressing concerns from St. Luke’s students about their future academic qualifications. These steps are crucial for a seamless integration, with an ongoing emphasis on maintaining the quality of education delivery and safeguarding the interests of existing students and faculty. Further strategic program additions may be considered in the future to support and expand health science disciplines.
